The AWM states that the HMT ROHNA was the troopship that took the 2/15th Battalion from Bombay to Egypt in early 1941. The Battalion's History states that this was the MV Indrapoera. Until this issue is resolved, details on both ships will appear on the site. The HMT Rohna was an armed troop ship that was named after a village in the Punjab in India. "Built: 1926 by R & W, Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. Ltd, Hebburn.. There is an interesting article on this ex-merchantman on this page - HMT Rohna. "Rohna first began her role as a personnel carrier as early as July 1939 but wasn't requisitioned on a permanent basis until May 1940. In 1941 Rohna saw service in the Far East and was present for the evacuation of Singapore."
It was sunk off Algeria in November 1943 by an early guided missile (or glide bomb) with very heavy loss of life. More on this can be found in its Wikipedia entry. |
